Activity one: Free Writing
For Tuan from my point of view, as a writer, his language is pretty scholarly and academic. He quotes a lot of works from others and sometimes makes me feel his explanation pretty complicated. However, he also raised a lot of examples and detailed descriptions, which I think enables his work to be more descriptive and interesting. Before I took this English class, I had already known that the topic of this course is “place”. I found this topic to be truly fascinating. When I first knew that we were going to discuss the relationship of people and place, I felt like I would have a lot to say under this topic. I regard myself as a sentimental person and for me, I think place this word is connected with the sense of belonging and the sense of safety. In Tuan’s work, although I have only read a limited part of his book, he has put a lot of sources, from various perspectives, to discuss the relationship between people and the place the stay. For the first part we read for our class, if my memory does not go wrong, Tuan describe how language shapes a place. And for the part we read today, Tuan discusses how the relationship between from people and place established through a intimate perspective.
Activity 2:
Tuan keeps discussing the relationship between people and “place” from many different perspectives. In the part we read today, he stresses his point to explain how people establish their sentiments with place. To some extent, place is not defined as the location people stay; instead, place is a locale where people are able to proceed reassurance and peace. As Tuan mentions, the beginning of human’s feel reassured and safe at a place is that they get cured from sickness or injury. Their experience of recovery in a certain place help them build the sense of reassurance that at this certain locale they are able to be safe. I agree with Tuan in this point because I have experienced the same situation before. When I was eleven years old in elementary school, I got a very serious fever during one mathematics class. And I fell over in the ground after that mathematics class. I was sent to the campus clinic after that. I stayed there for nearly six hours and the doctor in the clinic took care of me so well that although I got a very bad headache I felt truly delighted and warm. After this, every time I get into the school clinic, I feel safe. It sounds really weird but it is my real experience.
Activity 4:
I was required to do invisible writing, I feel this truly interesting, and I have not done this before. But this activity really helps me to be focused . When we talk about place, I think this topic should be really fascinating and we can have a lot to talk about. However, from my point of view, Tuan’s work disappears to be a little bit complicated for me to understand what he really what to express and it does takes me a little long time to recognize this ideas and get them connected with mine. There is also another interesting idea that Tuan has brought in his work,. He says that, “Permanence is an important element in the idea of place”. As the scene that Tuan has quoted in the play written by Tennessee Williams, fro animals , the relative permanence of location is truly important for the purpose of mating and propagating its species. However, for humans, the requirements for a place that becomes crucial to us is not only that we are able to stay in the specific area but also that we are able to communicate with people we care and express our ideas.
Activity 5:
Today I am going to give you a speech about our intimate experience of place. This topic is about my reflections for Tuan’s work about place. When I read the book, I found some very interesting viewpoints raised by Tuan. Today I am going to show it to you guys with my personal experience and understanding. As Tuan says, people’s experience of recovery from sickness or injury in a specific place help human beings develop a sense of the home in that place. And this, is definitely true. Well, at least, it can explain one of my weird feelings.
I, personally, like the school clinic very much. Well, I do not mean that I will randomly go to the school clinic frequently, like three times a week. I go there merely when I am ill, just like you guys. However, every time I get into the school clinic, I have the kind of feeling that I gonna be safe and recover soon. I know there are a lot of people do hate going to hospitals, or clinics. Maybe they cannot bear the smell of alcohol in the hospital or they just do not like this kind of place because this is where a lot of people passed away. Yeah, we can see that even for the same place, different people can have totally different attitudes towards it. The reason is that people always endow a physical space their specific sense of feelings and meanings. Well, now, we are a little bit tortuous and digressive from what I was going to say. Personally, I feel good when I am in the school clinic is due to my experience in the elementary school. Once I got a very serious fever when I was eleven years old. And I had been taken great care by the doctor in our school clinic. After that, I always feel warm when I get into the clinic when I am ill.
Activity 6:
Since we are discussing the relationship between people and place, I start asking myself where is my place. As a international student, there is a question that made me perplexed for a long time. Almost in every day, I am going to think of the question that should I live in the United States or should I get back to China. Undoubtedly, the life here is not that easy. I am away from my family, my friends, all the stuff I get used to. When I came here one year ago, I was nervous and afraid, although at most time I pretend to be confident and strong. Everything I got use to was immediately ten thousand miles from me. I was passionate and active in the campus. However, I feel so unfamiliar for this new environment. Sometimes I feel confused about what I should do, to party or to study. And I also feel hard to merge into the American culture. In America, I always feel myself as an outsider because the life here is totally different from that was in my past nineteen years. However, when I was in China, I expect the life in the United States so much. Thus, I was thinking that our experience in a new place will develop our understanding of the meaning of the old place for us. The temptation and sentiments we have and build in different places help us discover ourselves, help us know who we are and what we want most.
