Get it down. Take chances. It may be bad, but it’s the only way you can do anything really good. - William Faulkner
Written Project Reflection
The Gap Between final version and earlier drafts:
Except for informal response papers, I was asked to accomplish those formal writing assignments step by step, which means I was allowed to make several drafts before I got the final version for a paper. This process provided me enough time to deliberate both content and language I would apply and helped me build confidence for formal writing assignments that I always felt panic and anxious when I worked on them. Significant alternations always took place from earlier drafts to the final work.
The first significant alternation: the purpose to write
For earlier drafts, what I need to do is to progressively build my thesis and to explore the meaningful content.
However, in the final project, I have to combine all important thesis and ideas in a logically consistent way.
The second significant alternation: the language to use
In earlier drafts, I sometimes deploy complicated and varying sentence structures or advanced vocabulary.
In the final version, I will selectively reduce those complicated and obscure expressions to improve concision.
Reflection on Written Mode:
Through various and challenging exercises in this semester, I examine a specific written mode that help me better organize my paper. Before I start working on my paper, I always explore the useful resources on the internet at the first time and try to broaden my view of the specific topic. I select information from the resources I have browsed and combine the information with my own understanding. By repetitively exploring ideas and refining language, a thoughtful paper is then accomplished.
Reflection on Response Papers:
Response papers are informal writing assignments that are set up for assistance to our understanding and contemplation of the content that we discuss together. The investigating themes of our class have been divided into four units. The contents of these four units are all related. We are assigned to write one response paper for each unit. Response paper is always asked to hand in after we finish the study of a unit. By writing response paper, I am able to review the ideas we have discussed on class and combine readings with my understanding that has been build and improve through study. Response papers also provide me more opportunities to practice my writing skills.
Reflection on Group Reportage:
Writing group reportage is a valuable experience for me because it is the first time that I am not asked to finish a paper by myself. Tansy and I are divided into a group. This is a totally fresh experience for both Tansy and me. At first, we are unaccustomed to write together and we decide to work separately and each person focuses on one part. We combine our works together and make our first version of group reportage. The score is not appreciative so we try to figure out another way to do the reportage. We then realize that we should do research together and discuss main thesis before we start to write. This great experience not only teaches me how to write a reportage but also makes me know how to corporate with other people.
Reflection on Major Project Proposal+Bibliography:
Surprisingly, before I work on this proposal, I would never imagine that the assignment I gained most in this semester is proposal. I did not have any experience for I work on this one. At first, I felt so weird that I had to write a 1200 word proposal for a 1200 word formal paper. I always believe that a proposal should be only a couple paragraphs. However, after more profound understanding of how to write a proposal, I finally realized that a proposal did not require the writer to have a fixed thesis and have all the answers for the topic. Instead, the writer should present a couple of possibilities for major paper.
Reflection on Major Project:
This is the first time for me to write a complete research paper. I learned how to find useful information through the database of our school's library and the internet scholar resources.
